The sun is shining, temperatures are rising and spring is here. April will be a busy month. Our Multicultural Night is on Friday, April 21st where we will have food, fashion, and folk songs. … special thanks to all our families who are providing the native dress and delicious food. The 21st is also the start of our spring Book Fair which will run through the 28th. On April 27th, we will have our third annual Reading Fair and Ice Cream Social. There will be over 400 student reading projects on display in the hallways. April 28th will be our Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast in the Story Room at 8:15-8:45.
The year continues to move quickly and that means that our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will be taking the Standards of Learning (SOL) test in May. Testing will be spread over the three-week period from May 9th through May 25th. There will be the opportunity for retakes from May 31st to June 8th. Please return the SOL retake permission form that is coming home on April 20th and is on the web site. The SOL schedule is listed below, but as we are working with technology, there may be changes once we get started.
3rd grade: Reading 5/9&5/10; Math 5/18
4th grade: Reading 5/11; VA History 5/16; Math 5/23
5th grade: Reading 5/12; Science 5/24; Math 5/25
Please do your best to ensure students are well rested and here on time. Once a class starts testing, students are not permitted to join late. The SOL’s are important and we want every student to do his or her best, but please don’t let your child stress too much on the tests. They have worked hard this year and are ready. Giving some positive words of encouragement and showing confidence in your child will go a long way in helping him or her do well on test days.
As we begin to plan for next year. Appropriate placement and the creation of classes is a key to a successful year for all students. Your voice is important to us in this decision process. We have included a form called Parent Input Form 2017-18. If you have any special concerns or have information relevant to your child’s placement next year – please fill out this form and return it prior to May 26th
