5/12/2020 Update
The Parent Input Form (link) was sent via email this morning to my third and fourth grade parents. This is just an electronic version of the blue/pink forms that are sent home at the end of every year. Please fill out and submit. Let me know if you have any questions or need me to resend the link!

5/1/2020 Update
Items have been added to Document and Document Section (Writing) for all grades

We have our scheduled Zoom lunch bunch from 12:30-1:00 today. The link is in today's email. Third quarter report cards, progress reports, and rewards will be sent to you in PDF format on Tuesday, May 5th. Please look for them in your inbox and let me know if you have any difficulty opening the files. Grades were based on work completed prior to March 13th, when schools were closed due to COVID-19. (If your child opted to make up or redo 3rd Quarter assignments, the updated grades are reflected in grade book/on the report card.) As always, I hope you and your family are staying healthy and safe during this unprecedented time. Please let your child know that I miss them! 🙂 Have a great day/weekend!

4/23/2020 Update

Tomorrow I will be in 5th grade IEPs meetings late morning into early afternoon. Ms. Hicks will be holding the Zoom Lunch Bunch (12:30-1:00) in my place. I have emailed you the meeting link and password.

4/17/2020 Update

  • Students are able to make up previously assigned work until 4/24/2020. This is when the quarter ends and grades have to be entered into the report card.
  • The next Zoom lunch bunch will be on Tuesday from 12:30-1:00. Please let me know if you need the Zoom link again.

4/15/2020 Update

Happy middle of April! Most recent updates:
  • Lunch Bunches have resumed. We will meet again on Friday at 12:30pm. I'll send another update email on Friday to summarize what we did during the time.
  • Please check my class page as well as your general education teacher's class pages. They will be updated weekly with the new distance learning schedule and activities. All grade levels have weekly Zoom meetings. Please look for dates/times, as well as your general education teacher's office hours.
  • My official office hours are during our lunch bunch sessions (Tues/Friday, 12:30-1:00). This is the time that kids can ask me for help with any work they're doing. I'll still check my emails throughout the school week, however, and will respond to your questions as quickly as I can.
  • 5th grade parents: Please be on the lookout for your IEP transition meeting invitations. Beville students will have their meetings on Friday, April 24th. Benton students will have their meetings on Monday, April 27th. Your specific time is on the invitation. The middle school representative will update the IEP for special education time next year and can answer any questions you have about 6th grade. Unfortunately, due to the number of incoming and outgoing transitions, the middle school representative will only be available at Penn during your specific date/time. If you haven't already, please let me know if you will be attending via Zoom or phone conference (with the number we can reach you at).

Have a great rest of the week! I hope to see you all on Friday at our lunch bunch! Mrs. Sihrer :)

WEEKLY ZOOM LUNCH BUNCHES STARTING AFTER SPRING BREAK!

These will be on Tuesdays and Fridays, from 12:30-1:00, just like we have been doing. The link that we'll use is the same link that I've sent your parents--just save it so you can use it every time. If you need it again, just have your parents email me! :)

Rules for Zoom Lunch Bunches:
* Your parents/guardians need to know what you're doing online. Internet safety is super important! They either need to say hello as you first sign in or send me an email saying they're aware that you're going online to chat with our class.

*Zoom lunch bunches are considered a school activity, so all of the school rules apply! We need to remember our manners and be on our best behavior. (I have to report anything that's not appropriate!)

We can do a working lunch bunch, where we answer questions about the work you've chosen to do, or we will do lunch bunch, where we catch up with one another (and you practice the social skills I bet you don't even realize you're using. :)). This is considered our weekly "office time" with you guys while we continue to practice distance learning. (Office time just means the time I spend to work with you in our small group video conference. Kind of like we've always done in Room 116.)

Ms. Hicks and I miss you so much!

We can't wait to see your faces and hear your voices!
Love, Mrs. Sihrer and Ms. Hicks

UPDATE AS OF 3/24/2020

To my students:

Welcome to our online classroom! I miss each and every one of you and I'm so sad that I will not see you again this school year. I hope that you all are being good and helping out your parents at home. Please remember what we talked about before school closed: you are safe, loved, and everything will be okay. Just keep doing what you always do--wash your hands, catch your sneezes, eat your meals and drink your water so your body can have fuel to stay healthy, and if you feel sick, let your parents or guardians know so they can help you feel better again.

Right now, we don't have assigned work. I'm not teaching anything new because other teachers aren't teaching anything new...so don't worry about falling behind. Some optional suggestions for you to keep up your skills are what I always suggest: read every day, talk about the books with parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents, guardians, etc; practice your math (think about all of the math we've done this year), and write about what's going on in your life or make up a new story. If you'd like to email me, please do! That's another form of writing and I would love to hear from you. :)

I will update my web page as often as I can, so please keep checking in to see if I have anything new to add!

(Ms. Hicks and I would like to do a Zoom Lunch Bunch soon. Parents will need to log their child in and say hello, so I know you're aware that they're online with me. We won't be discussing any academics--just hanging out and catching up, like we usually do during the school week. Once I can figure out how to make our own virtual Room 116, I'll post more information as to date/time!)

Sending everyone healthy and positive thoughts! :)
Love,
Mrs. Sihrer

Parents:

I want to keep you as up to date as possible, especially in light of yesterday's news conference that schools will be closed to students for the remainder of the academic school year. Teachers still do not have answers to many questions (e.g. grades, IEPs, 5th grade transition meetings, etc.) but we should be receiving more guidance this week. The VDOE has to meet with VA district schools, who will then determine what course we take as we start to navigate the new waters of distance learning.

The county is asking that teachers post links of suggested sites, in case you want your child to keep up his or her skills at home. The links your child uses every day in my classroom are located in the Useful Links folder, on the left of your computer screen. PWCS has also created a
Home Learning section on their website, where you can access many other resources.

Teachers will be providing information through their class pages. We've been asked to have one central location for parents to find materials/links/etc.Your child's general education teacher will upload any optional academic review curriculum or links to her class page...I'll upload them as well, but the items will be on their pages first.

You can find their class pages here:
Third grade:
Ms. Piazza
Fourth grade: Mrs. Craven
Fifth Grade: Mrs. Henry

Feel free to check out the other resources available to other grade levels, either on my class page or the other class pages at Penn. (Reviewing previously learned material will help retain skills and boost confidence with the curriculum.) Specialists have asked for students to check out their class pages, as they are uploading information and optional activities for students to do at home, too.

Teachers will still be available for questions/concerns, so feel free to email me or your child's general education teacher whenever you have any questions or concerns. (Now that I'm home full-time with my two year old, the easiest method of communication for me is through email and not Dojo.)

As of right now, all PWCS teachers have been told that they cannot assign or teach new material. We can provide links and review materials of curriculum that we have already covered, but we cannot take grades on anything. Everything we have on our webpages is optional and not required. I have uploaded social emotional/social skills ideas/activities that you can utilize at home. My links are updated and activities are ready to go.

As always, I greatly appreciate your support. Sending safe, healthy, and positive thoughts your way.

Educationally yours,
Mrs. Sihrer
