Welcome Lee All-Stars! I am so excited to be your teacher! :) In our 2nd grade class, students will be reviewing skills from 1st grade and learning new 2nd grade skills in all subject areas: language arts, math, science and social studies.
Our Game Plan
Reading: We are now in the thick of guided reading and centers. Students are continuing to practice center procedures and making the most of their time. Currently, we are in Unit 6 and we are learning about monitoring our reading and summarizing information. We continue to review non fiction text features as we encounter them throughout our reading. Daily Read and Writes (DRWs) continue to be a weekly assignment as we strengthen how to answer questions in a text and write with a prompt. I expect students to be mindful of these writing points when answering: capitalization, punctuation, correct spacing, correct letter formation and complete sentences. We will continue to use weekly checklists to stay organized with our language arts assignments and centers throughout the week.
Writing: Writing happens daily in our room as a part of Reader's Workshop. Some days we will write using a prompt and other days students will be able to have free write. As stated above for my expectations of DRWs, students will be focusing on their grammar skills. We are currently taking a slight break from beginning a new writing unit as we complete in-class Book Fair projects. This will allow students to see what is expected of them once they rise to third grade OR if they choose to participate in the Book Fair this year in second grade.
Math: Unit 7: Number Sense and Computation #4 (throughout the year we will have 5 Number Sense and Computation units that build and review the skills from the previous unit and grade level). This unit introduces the students to double digit addition and subtraction facts, identifying and counting a collection of coins up to $2.00 (I will be teaching touch points, ask your child about these!), and story problems using the UPSC model (Understand, Plan, Solve and Check).
Science: Our next unit will be Habitats.
Social Studies: Geography: Students will develop map skills by locating the equator, seven continents, and five oceans on both maps and globes. They will be able to locate U.S. rivers, mountain ranges, and the Great Lakes. Last, they will be able to construct simple maps that include a title, map legend, and compass rose.
