Welcome Lee All-Stars! I am so excited to be your teacher! :) In our 2nd grade class, students will be reviewing skills from 1st grade and learning new 2nd grade skills in all subject areas: language arts, math, science and social studies.
Our Game Plan
Reading: In the beginning of the year, students are getting into the routines of Reader's Workshop. During this time, students are practicing their stamina (reading or writing without stopping and getting off task). We will be continuing with whole group "practice" rounds until students have learned the skills and can work independently enough to have center rotations. Our reading skills that we will be reviewing and learning are story elements (characters, setting, problem and solution) for fiction texts and features for non fiction texts (table of contents, glossary, index, graphics). We will be doing weekly Daily Read and Writes (DRWs) to learn how to answer questions in a text and write with a prompt. I will be expecting students to start answering the questions in complete sentences and writing with these 5 points in mind: capitalization, punctuation, correct spacing, correct letter formation and complete sentences. In addition to these skills and practice rounds of centers, I will be testing students to find their DRA Reading Levels and testing for PALS (Phonological Awareness).
Writing: Writing happens daily in our room as a part of Reader's Workshop. Some days we will write using a prompt and other days students will be able to have free write. As stated above for my expectations of DRWs, students will be focusing on their grammar skills. Each morning we practice and review grammar skills in our Morning Work books and are quizzed on those skills on Fridays.
Math: Unit 1: Number Sense and Computation #1 (throughout the year we will have 5 Number Sense and Computation units that build and review the skills from the previous unit and grade level). This unit has the students reviewing basic addition and subtraction facts, making ten, identifying and counting a collection of coins up to $2.00 (I will be teaching touch points, ask your child about these!), ordinal numbers, even vs. odd numbers and story problems using the UPSC model (Understand, Plan, Solve and Check). The test for Unit 1 will be on September 30th.
Science: Our first unit is on Matter and is under our Physical Science standards. In this unit students will be reviewing and learning the 3 stages of matter (solids, liquids, and gases), how matter changes, properties of matter and the vocabulary that goes along with those concepts. This is the perfect unit to review and experiment with at home. Kids love baking and cooking. They can see matter change when you are boiling a pot of water or putting something in the freezer.
