June 8, 2020

This is the last week of second grade for our students! While we did not close the year as expected with traditional end-of-year activities and celebrations, I think it’s safe to say that this is a school year that will always be remembered! Here are a few updates and reminders for the week ahead:

  • Student Belongings Pick Up – Second Grade families are scheduled to pick up their child’s belongings on Tuesday, June 9th from 9 AM – Noon. If that time does not work for you, you can choose to come during another grade level’s time/day. Please drive up to the front door and check in with a staff member at the front of the building. You can read the full directions for student pick up HERE.
  • Last Zoom Class – Our last Zoom Class will be held this Friday, June 12th at 10:00 AM. I will present students with the end of year awards and we will share our favorite memories from the year. Consider having your child write down what they would like to say about their favorite memories.
  • Summer Math Practice – The PWCS Math Department has put together a great resource for keeping math skills sharp over the summer. You can download the directions HERE.
  • Report Cards – These will be available in Parent View (HUB) after June 22. I will also email them with any awards your child has earned for the year.

June 1, 2020

As we near the close of the school year, there are many updates I would like to share with you:

  • Virtual Summer School - July 6-24
  • School Supply Drop Off - Please place school items (library books, instruments, textbooks, etc.) in a bag with your child's name and place in the bins at the front of the school. Last names A-L can drop off Monday June 1, and last names M-Z can drop off Tuesday June 2, 9 AM - 12 PM.
  • Pick up of Student Belongings - Families will be able to pick up students' belongings, including yearbooks and spring pictures, during the week of June 8-12. Exact dates and times TBD.
  • Zoom Classes - Our last two Zoom classes will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, June 5 and Friday, June 12. On June 5th we will take a Virtual Field Trip to Washington D.C! On June 12th we will have our end-of-year awards ceremony.
  • Report Cards - Report cards and awards will be emailed home just like the 3rd quarter report cards.

This week is Spirit Week leading up to Penn's Virtual Field Day on Friday, May 29th. Find more information about Field Day HERE

Our digital class meetings will continue on Zoom, on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:00 AM. The link to join will be emailed to you. We have gotten into a good routine of listening to a read-aloud, working on an estimation (math) activity, and then student sharing about our reading and/or home projects. Students should have paper and markers to write with (pencil is hard to see on the camera) for the math activities. A dry erase board works great if you have it but is not necessary. Also, students may find it helpful to have a 100 chart handy. You can download and print one HERE, but it is not necessary.

My parent office hours are Wednesdays from 2:00-3:00 PM on Zoom. I am also available by email 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Monday through Friday.

May 4, 2020

Report Cards and awards will be emailed home Tuesday, May 5, 2020. They will only be sent to email addresses in the HUB system.

Class Meetings on Zoom will continue on Wednesday and Friday this week at 10:00 AM. I would like to try a math activity during each lesson this week. Students should have paper and writing utensils with them so they can participate. A dry erase board would work great too if you have one.

I am available on Wednesdays from 2:00 - 3:00 PM for parent Office Hours on Zoom. I am also regularly checking and responding to questions by email during regular working hours Monday through Friday.

April 27, 2020

Class Meetings will continue on Zoom this week on Wednesday and Friday at 10:00 AM. The link has been emailed to you. On Wednesday I'd like students to be ready to share about a book they are reading or something they've written. On Friday we will have our very own little 3rd Quarter Awards Ceremony. You won't want to miss it!

Third quarter report cards and award certificates will be emailed to the email address in the HUB system for each child. If you do not have an email address listed or if you have not been receiving my weekly emails please contact me so we can sort it out before report cards are distributed.

We have now entered the fourth grading period. There will be no grades this quarter. The yearly grade for each subject area will be calculated using the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarter grades only. The second grade teachers will continue to share weekly suggestions with you. No work is required, but we strongly encourage regular reading and math practice. I have set new AR goals for the 4th quarter and students may continue taking AR quizzes on books they read at home. Go to Renaissance Place on the "Students" tab of this web page to take an AR quiz.

Questions? I am available by email during school hours. I have also set up a Zoom meeting for my official office hours every Wednesday from 2:00-3:00 PM. The link has been emailed to you.

Have a great week and stay safe!
Ms. Moler

Virtual Schoolhouse begins this week! While no new instruction will be happening it does not mean that the learning has stopped! Your second grade teachers have put together suggested weekly activities. You can find these activities posted in the Files and Documents section of this web page and they will be emailed to you if you have an email address in the HUB system.  Please check out the Division FAQ Page for more information and resources for Home Learning in Prince William County. I'm also happy to help via email or messaging.

Our class is meeting regularly using Zoom meeting. This is a great opportunity for students to see one another and to connect with the class. Please let Ms. Moler know if you have not received information about the time and dates of these meetings.

Lastly, please consider ordering a yearbook if you have not already done so. Yearbooks can be ordered online by going to the Lifetouch Website. You will need our school's Yearbook ID code - 13279320. Place your orders by April 19, 2020!

At the School Board Meeting on April 1, 2020 Dr. Waltz discussed continuity of learning moving forward for the rest of the school year. You can read his full remarks here. During this speech, Dr. Waltz mentioned redo opportunities and grading considerations for 3rd quarter. If you are concerned about your child's end of year grades please hold on to work items completed by your child from our weekly activities. We may be able to utilize these projects and activities as evidence to some of our learning objectives. We are awaiting further guidance on grading and should have more information after Spring Break.

Please continue to use our weekly activities and resources to help your child keep up with their reading, writing, math, science, and social studies learning! Stay safe and healthy!

March 23, 2020
The governor has officially closed schools for the remainder of the school year. I will continue to provide resources and suggested activities for review, but there will be no new graded assignments. In other words, please don't stress too much about keeping up with school work. Work completed (or not completed) during this break will not negatively effect students' grades. In the Files section, you will also find a document that details all the topics we have covered so far this school year, and those standards which have not been taught or mastered.

Also, please consider visiting our specialists webpages (Art, PE, Reading, etc.) for other helpful information and resources!
