It has been a pleasure working with your child this year! It has also been a new learning experience for all of us. New challenges, new technology, and new safety precautions! Everyone is already looking forward to the summer. However, summer can cause students at every grade level to digress two to three months in their academic skills. Please set aside 15 to 30 minutes for your child to read every day. This will preserve and strengthen their reading skills. Even if the libraries are still closed, there are plenty of useful online resources available to them which they have used during this quarter (with thousands of books available). Working on three to four math problems daily can prevent their math skills from getting rusty. Please also encourage them to write at least a paragraph every day on topics of their choice or in the form of journal writing. Practicing these skills will prepare your student well for the coming year!! Have a great summer!

About the ESOL Team: Hello! Welcome to our webpage. As you can see, we work with students in all the grade levels from all around the world. We would like to tell you a little about ourselves and our educational backgroundat this time.

Mrs. Rachel Horowitz has been teaching in PWCS since 1999. Mrs. Horowitz graduated from Prince William County Schools and taught at Tyler Elementary (the school she went to as a child) for 12 years prior to having her son. Mrs. Horowitz has studied in Derbyshire, England and Valencia, Spain. She was one of 11 chosen recipients by the Washington Post/Embassy of Spain to do a teaching fellowship at the Universidad Compultense in Madrid, Spain. She has taught the FLES program (Foreign Language in the Elementary School) and ESOL (English for Students of Other Languages). She has a master’s degree in Multicultural Education and undergraduate degrees in Liberal Studies, Elementary Education and Spanish. Mrs. Horowitz loves to travel, read, paint, work in the garden and spend time with her family which includes a little dog too.  She is passionate about working with her students to help them learn and grow. It is her privilege to work with the students and staff at Penn Elementary!

Mr. Zahid Khan grew up and studied and trained to be a teacher in England. Although his degree was in elementary education, he started his teaching journey in a high school (in 1988), where he was once an ESL student himself. He worked in his old high school for 13 years (final 6 years as an administrator), before moving to USA in 2001. For the past 20 years, he has taught ESOL in Prince William County. Mr. Khan is also a certified Youth and Community Worker as well as a soccer coach and used to coach for Sheffield United, a professional soccer club in England. Mr. Khan is very passionate about working with the youth and very excited to be teaching at Penn Elementary this year, in what will be his 33rd year of teaching!

Ms. Lydia Mockabee received a double major in Teaching English as a Second Language and Spanish, both with a Teacher Licensure for the state of Virginia. Prior to that, she has had some experience teaching Spanish privately for 3 years and did some volunteer translation and interpretation in the States for several years as well as on several trips abroad to the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Guatemala. She has a passion for expanding education to those in need and making a way for learning to be fun and fulfilling! She also enjoys spending time with people, singing and writing music, learning foreign languages, staying active, serving God, and other various things! Working with ESOL students at PENN, where she formerly attended elementary school as a student herself, has been such a valuable and rewarding experience so far!

Class Schedule: All our class schedules vary. We often work inside the general education classrooms or we pull out small groups of students to our classrooms. If you are interested in knowing when we work with your child(ren) please feel free to send us an email and we will get back to you.  **Since we will no longer be going to the school building please refer to the office hours and look in the announcements for upcoming Zoom meetings the ESOL teachers will be attending.
