Military Families

Meeting the Transitional Needs of Students of Military Families

Penn Elementary School provides a supportive environment to address the transitional needs of all military family students, whether in general education, special education, or gifted services. Seamless acceptance and accommodation are provided to military family students coming from different areas of the world giving educational access while addressing their current individualized educational needs. There are subsequent evaluations conducted to ensure appropriate placement and appropriate services are provided once the student starts attending school at Penn. Students from military families are given peer support in the classroom as well through the First Friends school program.

We celebrate our students of military families throughout the year with school wide events like flagpole assemblies, on days like Patriot Day and Veterans Day. The students also write letters to the Veterans, thanking them for their service and the letters are presented to veterans-on-Veterans Day. Our school participates each April in the division wide celebration of the Military

Child. During this time, teachers hold class discussions to commemorate the service of all the military branches. We honor military families by wearing a different color on designated days to represent each branch. Our military pride shows through here at Penn as we recognize the sacrifices made by our students and families as they serve our country. The message is made clear to all students, these families are a source of pride in our school culture, and we show appreciation for the sacrifice they all make for our country during this month.
